Hide and Wild
Zimanga · South Africa
This selection of photographs comes from Zimanga, a game reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, with photographic hides beside its waterholes. The pictures made from them sit at the animals’ own level: a pair of white rhinos mirrored in black water, an elephant reaching down to drink, a warthog at the edge of the light, a hamerkop tossing its catch into the air.
The rest were made in the open bush. Giraffes in mist and golden dust, cheetahs resting, two male lions in morning haze. The two ways of working alternate through the sequence, the stillness of the hide and the movement of the bush.
The sequence follows the light, from morning mist to the night waterhole. It closes at the night waterhole, with two white rhinos and their reflection.
The places
Zimanga lies about 330 km south of MalaMala, in northern KwaZulu-Natal. MalaMala sits against the western boundary of Kruger National Park, in Mpumalanga.
